Chapter 1. Despondency of Arjuna: Verse 4
युयुधानो विराटश्च द्रुपदश्च महारथ: ||
yuyudhaano viraatashcha drupadashcha mahaa-rathah
Commentary & Explanation
Duryodhana sees great fighters like Bhima, Arjuna, Yuyudhana(Satyaki), Virata and Drupada in the opposite side and tells it to teacher Drona.
Bhima was the second son of late King Pandu, he was born of Vaayu Deva(Deity of wind force), Bhima literally means he who is capable of great deeds (Bheema Karma). He symbolizes Prana(Life-force energy) in human body. His life force is said to have risen to Vishuddha Chakra. In spirituality he whose Prana has risen to Vishuddha Chakra (throat Chakra) is said to be capable of great deeds because of one pointed force. Bhima had extraordinary physical strength.
Arjuna was the third of the sons of Pandu, he was born of Indra Deva (king of demi-gods, he who has control over his senses(Indriyas)). Name Arjuna means- he who is glorious and shines through his deeds. He symbolizes Self-control. Because of his spiritual attainments he was both physically powerful and intellectually refined. Arjuna's life force is said to have risen to Anahata Chakra(Heart Chakra), he was compassionate even in battles. He would shoot an arrow into enemy's heart and kill them with least violence, whereas most warriors would usually kill their opponents by mutilating their bodies, spilling blood and creating fear in enemies.
Satyaki the Son of Satyaka was also referred to as Yuydhana, Yuyudhana means he who fights for himself. He symbolizes spiritual fight, struggle for enlightenment. Satyaki was a close friend Arjuna, he was also a great devotee of Lord Krishna(intelligence). Satyaki was naturally inclined towards righteousness and spirituality, his alignment with Pandavas was natural.
Virata was a Matsya king who ruled BiratNagar, Virat literally means extraordinary, When Pandavas were in exile they spent an year in Virata's kingdom in disguise. His daughter Uttara was married to Arjuna's son Abhimanyu.
Drupada was the king of Paanchaala, Drupada literally means "he who moves swiftly", in spiritual terms, Drupada is one whose progress towards realization is swift. Such progress is only possible for those with detachment from passions & devotion to the path.
Maharata is that great warrior who can take on 11,000 soldiers at a time, Maharatas are also placed in command of 11,000 soldiers in their own side.
